By a remarkable coincidence a soldier from the Isle of Wight, Sergeant Reginald Toogood, was rescued by one of the little fleet of Isle of Wight ships, the Bat.
On 31st May 1940, when Captain Butcher took his ship to the Dunkirk beach for the second time, he picked up a hundred soldiers and amongst them was Sergeant Toogood.
Sergeant Toogood was a signaller, a professional soldier, then aged 28.
